Ecological Urbanism considers the city with multiple instruments and with a worldview that is fluid in scale and disciplinary focus. Design provides the synthetic key to connect ecology with an urbanism that is not in contradiction with its environment. The promise is nothing short of a new ethics and aesthetics of the urban. Co-edited by Mohsen Mostafavi and Gareth Doherty, the book’s premise is that an ecological approach is urgently needed both as a remedial device for the contemporary city and an organizing principle for new cities. The Harvard DRCLAS Brazil Office partnered with the Graduate School of Design and Brazilian collaborators to launch the Portuguese version of Ecological Urbanism.

Universidade Positivo, Curitiba (April-June 2016)
The Urbanismo Ecológico traveling exhibition, where the 656 pages of the homonymousbook were presented at large scale, was displayed at Universidade Positivo in Curitiba, Brazil. The exhibition opening on April 27th included a conference in which speakers presented on themes extracted from the groundbreaking book Urbanismo Ecológico.

The II International Symposium on Ecological Urbanism took place on July 7, 2015 in São Paulo, SP, Brazil. The event consisted of panels and debates on the themes “Adapt” and “Interact” extracted from the groundbreaking book Urbanismo Ecológico, a recently launched Portuguese version of “Ecological Urbanism”. Harvard Graduate School of Design Professor Gareth Doherty spoke at the event, which also marked the Urbanismo Ecológico exhibition reopening, where the book's 656 pages are presented at large scale.

Centro Cultural São Paulo (October, 2014)
On October 14, 2014 the Centro Cultural São Paulo, one of São Paulo’s most prominent cultural centers, was home to the International Symposium on Ecological Urbanism. Professor Mohsen Mostafavi, Dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD), and GSD Professors Charles Waldheim, Diane Davis, and Gareth Doherty welcomed an audience of over 250 people for the event. Participating speakers included local and international architects, urban planners, theorists, policymakers, and NGO leaders who discussed various themes presented in the book Urbanismo Ecológico. The event also marked the opening of the Urbanismo Ecológico exhibition where the 656 pages of thebook were presented at large scale. The exhibition was held on the scenic rooftop garden of the Centro Cultural São Paulo between October 14 and November 9, 2014.
